Those old Holtons are beautiful-sounding instruments (I should know.), and inspite of the larger size once you get used to it, it should prove to be more of a "race car" than your detachable bell King. (ie. I think that you'll find the Holton is more flexible and slurs easier than your King.)

There are plenty of people who would pay $5000, and frankly I'm wondering why you're making such an issue of the finish. The Gronitz-shiny/Holton-dull is NOT the proper way to compare the two instruments:

Besides more esoteric ways to compare, to me the nuts-and-bolts obvious comparison attitude is:

Holton - rare and desirable as hell
Gronitz - call up a guy, read off my credit card number, and wait for a few days or weeks

HOWEVER, if you're trying to talk yourself into the Holton you should play this instrument with a tuner so that you will completely understand some of the serious problems which you have not yet discovered:

Warm the instrument up, tune the Bb's, and then play

- F at the bottom of the staff
- f in the staff
- D in the staff
