Did you play your scale without pulling any slides? I have tried many tubas but never found a 5 valve one that didn't require a lot of lipping and slide pulling in the low range. In most cases that is what stops people from playing those scales to such an extent that major books on orchestration say the tuba is not capable of playing faster than quarter notes in that range.

The Gronitz I mention is not the same as mine but simple and lighter. They have been made for a long time, at least 70 years.
