I'm wondering if the Fafner is the tuba based on the old Berlin Philharmonic horn, that was used in Hitler's Personal Guard Police Band. As I heard the story, at the end of WWII when these band instruments were found by US troops, they gathered them up and turned them over to the Berlin Philharmonic. This tuba is in Germany as legendary as the Chicago York CC's are here. I played a copy of this instrument at the Musik Messe in Frankfurt several years ago, and it was a most satisfying instrument to play and listen to. It had a really robust, schnitzel, potatoes and dark beer sort of sound, but was nimble enough to play technical passages with relative ease. The intonation was good enough, too. Is the Fafner this same horn, or does Meinl-Weston have a different designation for this instrument?
