Chronic Slide-Pull-emia!

When do you get to the point where slide pulling is too much work? I have a 4/4 piston CC tuba that plays well in tune WHEN I pull slides constantly, mainly 1st and 3rd. I've found myself the last few days walking around moving my fingers practicing, not fingerings, but slide pulling! It feels like I have to work as hard to get correct slide pulls as I do right fingerings.

I like the sound I get on my tuba, but intonation interferes with my playing, especially in a quintet, when I can't get the slides in and out fast enough. I know there is no perfect tuba that requires no adjustment, but when do you move on to something better in tune than what you've got?

Thanks in advance,

Jason Harrell
