You might be able to avoid some slide pulling by using alternate fingerings. For example, try 123 instead of 1 for that Ab. And use 4 or 13 instead of 1 for the C above it. I had an old York monster that used to require those fingerings. On another tuba I find it helpful to keep the 1st slide out an inch when I play in Eb, and put it back for other keys. On my favorite concert tuba I usually pull the 2nd or 4th slide whenever I use 24. Usually one choice is more convenient than the other, but neither pull is needed very often.
