I have generally found that the much maligned older American BBb tubas, Conns and Kings mostly, require less slide pulling than many modern CC horns. (Not to mention your beloved Conn 14K sousaphone -- though I've found most 20Ks will play well in tune with a Conn 2 mouthpiece also) In his book, Lee Stauffer describes having a tuning stick on his main slide on his Conn 34J Grand Orchestral, and the big Martins built for the Navy Band in the late '50s had main slide tuning levers. Perhaps there is a relationship between bore size and intonation (though I can't think of a scientific reason why) -- I have found the .687 bore Kings and .734 bore Conns play better in tune than horns with larger bores.
