While I understand and appreciate your sentiment it has been my token observation that many 'pro quality' horns have very loose slots and can indeed be played 50 cents or more either direction from center with very little if any degredation in sound. When Jacobs talked about playing by sound rather than feel I think this may have been part of what he was getting at. When looked at in this light I think the main purpose of slides on a horn that is super resonate w/ loose slots is to help set up the kind of response you are looking for more than for intonation. The benefits to this approach is that it becomes much easier to always be in tune and horns that are played this way are also typically easier to change the color of your sound depending upon what your musical goals are.
