My preference of the 981 over the 982 is well known. But it would not help you to get a current version of the 981. B&H have changed its leadpipe position, so that it is identical to that of the 982.
What would help you leadpipe-position-wise would be the original Fletch-version of the 981. It had the leadpipe coming horizontally out of the valve cluster.
I am sure samples of this version still are in full musical action. But I would doubt, that their owners would easily be persuaded to part from them.
Maybe B&H could provide you with an original leadpipe from that version. Technically it would be easy to mount it on the 982, but it would scar the silver plating.
