There are documents recording that Verdi visited the Orsi Factory in Milan in 1894 to discuss the design of a "cimbasso". French tuba player Mark Giradault has an Orsi instrument in C with 4 rotors dating from around this time built in the format we recognise as a cimbasso.(this is info told to me by Steve Wick). I have seen photos of 3 seperate instruments all dating from that era in BBb.
The difference is the bore is in keeping with a trombone. I feel most current cimbassi are too big a bore for their length. My design is a little smaller. when I've finished I'll post pictures.
