Interesting about your wife's reaction. I'm married to a horn player, am a horn player myself, and I just can't stand to hear him play sometimes. Especially long tones. I find it immensely irritating, because I can't get away from it. Since we both work and are home only in the evening, I'd like a little peace and quiet sometimes.
OF course, if _I'm_ playing long tones, it's not at all irritating. Except to the cat.
