4 valve vs compensating euph

OK, I got a question. I got around to messing around with the king 4 valve euphonium I bought a while back, and I find that by pulling the 4th valve slide to be quite flat, I can play all the notes that I need, in tune, below F by using the 4th valve and "pretending" it's an F horn. The too-long 4th valve slide compensates for the too-short length of the other three valves. Now, why would someone need 1) a compensating euphonium, or 2) that wacky spring-loaded thing that is on the 3rd valve of my horn?
Just wondering, because everything plays in tune just fine.
