When I bought one of these horns back in the early 80's, it came with a brochure about tuning, and it suggested just the tuning arrangment to suggest. Rather than tuning the fourth valve to F, the brochure recommended tuning the fourth valve to Eflat. Obviously this requires one to play second space C with 1-3 rather than fourth valve. This is the reason they have the spring loaded tuning slide on the third valve; so you can lengthen that valve combination to get the note in tune, same for second line B natural. Otherwise those notes are definitely sharp. Also then 2-3 combinations are still in tune when the slide returns to its normal position. The longer fourth valve then helps the player get the low register notes below the staff in tune (including a low B natural) and you can use the spring loaded third valve slide if necessary down there also. A unique idea, and one worth using if you don't mind being different. It will work. And it is a less expensive alternative to a compensating euph.
