Thank you Dale! This is exactly the point I was trying to make. We should absolutely be steering our kids away from 90's political correctness idiocy and toward the ideals that made this country great in the first place, namely hard work and perseverance. I once auditioned for the Pittsburgh Symphony (the audition that Sumner won) on an American Standard 3 piston valve Eb tuba that was missing all the finger buttons, missing half the braces (it was very weird having a tuba that moved when you played it), and was spray painted gold (my mother did this for my high school graduation party because she thought the tuba was beyond playability so she spray painted it to make it look presentable and then stuffed a bouquet of flowers in the bell and then strung it to a tree in the backyard with some wire as a decoration). I can't begin to describe the face on the audition monitor as I he escorted me on stage and saw the tuba. He complimented me alot afterwards, particularly on how he never would have guessed I could sound "like that" on a tuba that was in such disrepair. I've said it before and I'll say it again, a great player sounds great on just about any equipment. Just do it!
