Awareness about a horn's condition is something ANYone who plays has,
be they 12 years old or 52. I think though that it is SHEER 90's brainless IDIOCY
to worry more about the kids embarrassment and less about
their growing musicality or potential for such. Arnold Jacobs won his Curtis audition
on a beat up tuba with a taped-down valve, and the horn at the school
was supposed to be a crummy instrument. Those things didn't stop him,
should we be worrying about keeping students who would let such formidable
barriers stop THEM???
