"branded" elementary music

OK, another opportunity for flames...

Surely there are some tuba players out there who teach elementary music:

In my town, everyone is totally hung up on (Carl) Orff elementary classroom music and (trademark) Suzuki-style violin, piano, and flute teaching.

Needless to say, the books and c.d.'s for the Suzuki methods consist of few pages per $ and the "Orff" toy instruments purchased by government elementary schools cost a fortune.

Is the musical education of small children this myopic across the United States?

Surely there must be other systems that are just as effective (or perhaps more effective).

Just like Microsoft software, are we "stuck" with Orff and Suzuki? Are they really so excellent that we shouldn't look elsewhere?
