Ken gives a good general overview, but I would disagree with one point - the Orff and Kodaly methods (to some, philosophies) are not "performance" oriented, they are PROCESS driven. Yes, the Kodaly approach is vocal based and the Orff approach relies heavily on pitched percussion instruments, but both have the goal of musical literacy. Most Elementary Music teachers in my state (Texas) integrate Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze methods along with playing recorders, folk dancing, and dramatics. Many teachers also include playing handbells, mountain dulcimer, and guitar in upper elementary grades. J.S. -I challenge you to attend some of the Elementary workshops in your state's Music Educator's Convention (or come to Texas in February!). I think you will walk away amazed by the enthusiasm, creativity, musicianship, and commitment among Elementary Music teachers.
