I learned viola as an adult from a teacher who used the Suzuki books, but not the Suzuki method. The thing I really appreciated about the series was the way each piece contained one new skill element. Overall, I think the first four books are very well thought out and, although a bit pricy, a very good introduction to string playing. Past Book Four you are probably better off selecting pieces from the general repertoire.
