Playing loud with a good sound

Lately my band director has been encouraging me to play louder. Now when I play loud on long sustained passages I tend to get a double buzz. When I play loud on a note of a shorter lenghth I sound really heavy, almost blatty. Is there any secret to playing loud with a good sound?
