Hey Tubanator, Sean mentioned a couple of great ideas! First of all, the buzz is the most important part, because that is where the sound enters the horn. If it is a weak and airy buzz, the resulting sound will be airy, and when louder it will break up more easily. If your build your buzz, by doing mpc exercises and lots of low register playing at sustained loud volumes (not too loud) your buzz will become thicker and stronger and your sound will be more full, and project better even at moderate volumes like Randy said. As far as listening to good tubists, this is very important just so you know what it should sound like in the first place, and what the instrument is capable of in the hands of a professional. Get some CD's if there isn't an orchestra or othe pro player nearby.
Good Luck!
