A couple of posts below (the Nirchl for sale post and the Monsterweights post) have me thinking that there may be 2 opposing views on "damping" of sympathetic vibrations.
Leadpipes are often "lifted" from the bell. I would think this was to "increase resonance" and seems to be done for reasons directly opposed to that of damping.
A leadpipe that was soldered to the bell would seem to provide some "damping" of sympathetic vibrations, and thus (a la Monsterweights) have some beneficial effect.
Of course, I may be totally off-base and these two concepts are NOT mutually-exclusive. (This would be my guess! ;^)
Would someone care to shed light on this subject?
