Some of those bridges constructed scores and scores of years ago have fallen down ("London Bridge" is not just a song, and the failure of the Tacoma Narrows bridge is an awesome film to see) during the long, difficult process of figuring out what structural engineering is all about. Only the most sound examples have survived. My college roommate was an SE, and his professors would travel the world to sites of natural disasters to analyze the failed structures. What they learned is what they taught to future engineers so they could design structures that were less likely to fail.
