It occasionally happens otherwise, but quite often "big" orchestras hire candidates whom they view are "serious" as subs months before any formal auditions. This allows the musicians several days to hear how someone REALLY plays and, frankly, to discover if they are someone that they can stand to be around for (possibly) decades.
It may well not be the case with the BSO, but if you haven't been asked to sub, you possibly may need not be terribly concerned with this.
