There are exceptions to every "rule". The tuba audition scene (no. of incredible players out there) was vastly different 20 years ago. If Andy gets invited to the audition, and outplays everybody, then they might give him the job. Or, they might look at his resume and decide that the Ithaca University Symphony is not enough experience, and give the job to any of the other 3 or 4 finalists who all play more than well enough to land the job and who might have years of major symphony orchestra experience. It's all up to the committee (read: Ozawa or Levine)

I agree that being asked to send a tape means nothing. Being invited to audition live based on a tape that you submitted is another thing. In any case, anyone who busts their ass practicing for the next few months while dreaming of winning this, or any of the other jobs coming up, will be a better player because of it.
