Thanks Jay. Yes, this is the REAL world. Professionals do not tolerate unprofessional behavior, habits, etc. My comments were not meant to offend (although many are offended by the truth), but were to just point out fact. Our man here might indeed be a fantastic sightreader. If he was, I suspect he wouldn't ask for the music. Instead, he would use that fantastic skill at the audition and nail it. He could borrow a book from a fellow competitor at the audition. It's is ridiculous to think that one can go unprepared to a major audition, because the competition take it very seriously and are very well prepared. The best sightread piece will not compare to the same piece moderately prepared. It's not like this is a high school region band audition. These guys are great and are prepared to nail everything. You have to give yourself every chance, and if you don't, that is foolish. There are NO excuses that can be given. Hey, we all procrastinate once in a while, but not when it comes to something of this significance. If he makes it, (or at least makes a great showing) a world of opportunities, exposure, etc. become available. If not, sorry... That is reality. Not meant to demean or offend. If the guy is getting an audition, then he must be pretty good. He owes it to himself to give it his best because of what's at stake. He shouldn't squander his talent and this opportunity. If he's that good, he deserves a great audition. To get that, one must prepare extensively. There's no other way. No shortcuts, no excuses. He can get that opportunity again if he auditions at a later time when he's prepared. If there's not an opportunity in four years, well, that's life, isn't it. We all have choices, to which there are consequences. Make the right choices. Don't blame anyone, don't make excuses. As Jay said, this is the real world. One has to be a real person and do the things that are required of real people. Sorry if that sticks in anyone's craw, however, that's how the real world works.
