Let's just stick with the facts, and set aside personalities. Can I assume from your statement that it is, in fact, okay and musical to play low notes in the middle of a phrase with considerably more edge than the other notes of the phrase? Is that really musical?

Personally, Dr. Young lets us off the hook too easily by blaming the instruments. This sound concept is in the mind of the players, because I believe that they are good enough to play those low notes anyway they want, even on our peashooters and tiny mouthpieces.
