Actually, removing laquer will lighten or brighten the sound somewhat. Laquer actually dampens or lessens some of the higher overtones in the sound. I don't think that removing the laquer will change the sound much (maybe 10-15% change in sound). It might change the sound as much as a different mouthpiece would.
