Yes, my job specialization is traffic management. But I didn't pursue that specialty until after my undergraduate work. I am just as well-trained to build bridges as to control traffic on them. The physics involved there is quite similar to what we are talking about. If you can understand indeterminant structures, mechanical resonance, fatigue, and materials science (up to a point), then translating those basics to other systems that relate vibrations to materials isn't much of a stretch. Physics is physics.
