low register articulation

I am having problems cleanly articulating passages in the low register (i.e. around C below staff and lower.) This is showing itself as a problem on some march excerpts I am working on ( George Washington Bicentennial, Them Basses at times). When I try double or triple tonguing down there, I feel like I trip over my tongue and rush. When I single tongue I can't play lightly enough to articulate in time. Any suggestions for syllables to use or exercises to do? Also, how to bridge the gap between single and multiple tongue in general? Any exercises? Thanks in advance.
