Orchestras such as Seattle, along with the London Symphony, are often used on movie soundtracks because they are non-union and perform on a buy-out basis. Producers save about 1/3 of the initial cost using these groups as opposed to the L.A. people, and have to pay NONE of the so-called "back-end" money in reuse fees and special payment checks that the union guys get. So when you think about buying a movie such as "Mr. Holland's Opus"(Seattle) or any of the many flicks that the London Symphony plays on, you are paying no money to your musician colleagues.
