One of the weirdities of ear plugs (which substantially stop off hearing) is that you can actually hear your intonation better. Not your sound quality, but intonation. It would be worth a try for you to actually put an earplug in your left ear, and see how well your pitch sense changes. Of course, you will still need to be able to hear the group in your right ear, in order to match the two. Losing my hearing is one of the things I worry about; I havent' had it checked because I don't want to know.
