Specific UPS experience: I had a french horn shipped to me via UPS and was home when it arrived. The guy brought it from the truck and put it WHAM down on the porch. Don't ship via UPS. They use the same line of gorillas that the airlines use for baggage.

OTOH, I got a tuba from Dave Fedderly shipped on Amtrak. It cost $35 and arrived in perfect condition. Only possible drawback was I had to go pick it up, but then again it wasn't left on my front porch for the hoodlums to steal.
