I was thinking about your comments about the first & third triplets being the most important articulations; it occurred to me that the difference would be even more crucial when you have two-sixteenth-note pickup figures (William Tell overture, e.g.: tadadum tadadum tadadum tum tum...). So we have cases where the first articulation is on the beat (triplets),and articulations where the last one is on the beat (two sixteenth notes pickup); can anyone think of a case where the second one would be on the beat, or otherwise the 'important' note (and, yeah, I know, they're all important, but you KNOW what I mean...)
