Question about 3 vs 4 valve Compensators

I have been seeing a lot of 3 valve compensating horns on the auction sight recently, but most of the new compensating horns are 4 valve. Being new to the concept of a compensating horn, I was wondering: Why would it be better to have a 4 valve?

The way I figure it, when using a three valve compensating BBb, the compensation helps for more notes in more partials. That is, it would help on the C and Db below the staff, three Gb's and the F and E an octave below the staff. The fourth valve would only help the B-natural below the staff and the pedal notes below the low F. Since for my use(Though I admit, I'm not a pro) , I rarely go down that far, wouldn't a 3 valve compensating horn help me out more?

One other question: assuming it's in working order, would anyone use a 100 year old horn as their main axe? I'm looking for a horn and am interested in those on e-bay, but I admit I am terribly gunshy about bidding.

Thanks in advance
