In 1954 I played that solo with Stravinsky conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony. I asked him what size tuba he preferred and he replied "for Russian Music the largest possible tuba is the best". I asked him if that applied to Bydlo also and he said yes. Before that time the PSO recorded the Rite of Spring and the tubas got praised in a Hi Fi Magazine. The recoring session took all day and the bassoon solo wasn't recorded til the end of the session. The bassoonist, a Mr. Kuby was tired by then and it took several tries to get the solo optimized. However, a dog barked behind the stage and it was not noticed til the record was published. The Hi Fi mag didn't like the barking or the quality of the recording. When Stravinsky came as guest conductor, many of us had him sign the jacket of our record.
