I attended a concert of the NY Philharmonic last night at their home, Avery Fisher Hall. The orchestra sounded as good as any group could sound in that awful hall....thats not the point of this post. Is it me or are the audiences in NY the worst ever? It is quite common for there to be a few coughs and clearing of throats inbetweeen movements in a piece, but last night it sounded like an emphasima convention. Really, really loud coughs and general noise. It got to the point where there was audible laughter at the rucus that was being generated. Without fail, at the conclusion of a movement there would the clearing of phlem and whatever tar the patrons of the NY Phil pick up through the wonderful air in the greater NY area. At another point I heard what sounded like a big paper cup fall to the ground. Apparently I missed the beer concession stand in the lobby during intermission. Silence is Golden!!!
