Were you the tubist with San Jose Symphony when George Cleve was conductor? I played trumpet in "Magic Flute" in Berkeley Opera Orchestra under his direction. He was a real taskmaster, complete with surly personality. He could be pretty intimidating at times, but did he ever get the attention of the orchestra and singers. He had one of the most clear and crisp styles of conducting I've ever worked with. The temperaments of some conductors are the stuff of legend. But, adding a little fear and tension can sometimes get good results. (As for me, I much prefer the kindly and positve conductors.)
