After all the conductor bashing (most of it justified, I'm sure) I'm glad you appreciated George Cleve. I knew him as a pupil of Pierre Monteux at what is now referred to as the Monteux Institute, back in August 1963, the last summer that Monteux led the classes. For the closing concert, George was given the entire program - two works - Brahms 3rd Symphony, and Ravel's Daphnis & Chloe 2nd Suite. The overall quality of the orchestra that summer was uneven to put it kindly, but the performances George drew for these works continues to define them for me to this day. Lucky you, you got to work for him in a fully professional orchestra.
