Take a look at an orchestration book from the 20's. Betcha it'll describe a 3 valve BBb and Eb tuba and a 4 valve F tuba. So why would a 3-valve CC be so unusual? There are plenty of old 3-valve F tubas kicking around.

Fast forward 40 years to the 1960's. 4 valve contrabasses are very common, as are 5 valve F tubas. Yet Besson turned out a 3-valve CC, in spite of the more sophisticated customer base.
