I know I'll be roasted for this one...... I have owned a Besson 983(crappy quality, hated the valves, mpc sensitive to no end, a 980(cool horn, smaller sound with not much variety, valve guide pains, now in a SA band in NY state) and a Willson(maybe it was too big for the job, didn't like the tone color palette, felt "lumbering").

I now own a Yamaha (yes, a Yammie) that was a show horn or something because it was bought from Yamaha's "not so new" dept. (read "cheap"). It's a YEB-632s. Great valves, terrific sound and feel, flexible in all respects (mpcs, variety of sounds, etc.).

Yes, it's a compensator, but it has a very open 4th valve range (really, I mean it....), so much so that the sound is even and unchanged all the way down to the pedals.

You may be saying to yourself "LV, you just have "one of the good ones", but I've played a couple of these and although I do think mine plays better (good thing, huh?), they all were very nice Effers.

FWIW,

LV
