Whilst he studied at Cambridge University (not a Music Degree but Science of some sort!) he played almost exclusively Horn as there was already a Tubist at the Uni! He actually auditioned for a Horn position in the LSO (I think) and was offered the job. Can't recall why but in the end he decided against it. When the Tuba position at the BBC came up he dusted-off his tuba and got that job!

He loved Haydn's Clock Symphony and learnt to play ALL the orchestral instruments well enough to play any part from the work.

As a side note, Fletch did play F and Bb on occasion but for the bulk of his career he played 'nearly everything' in orchestra on one of his 6/4 Holton CC's and his Besson 981 Eb in the PJBE (any Chamber stuff basically).

The man was simply a genius and it was a tragedy he died so prematurely.
