In the past, I thought of taking a good-but-not-terribly expensive (Yamaha 321 / Weril 980, etc.) 4-valve euphonium, acquiring a bell-front alto horn w/detachable bell + first two bows, adding detachable braces to the euphonium body, and morphing one of these 4-valve non-compensating euphoniums to a choice of either playing it as a regular 4-valve instrument or popping on the 2nd bell (inserting the small end of its loop in the 4th valve slide) and also having the option of 3-valve + bell double-bell euphonium.

Has this ever occurred to anyone else? I've thought of it often. It would be an easy project, but I've never had the resolve to devote the time to knocking one out...

...plenty of cheap alto horns/"altoniums" out there to harvest the necessary parts...
