Mike Finn m.p.'s, & m.p.'s in general

OK, just an observation on my part. After many people were praising the design and comfort of the Mike Finn m.p., I now see many of them up for sale - particular the #3 model. Does this just confirm the notion that m.p.'s are a purely personal thing, or is there some other component involved here? Does this go to show that many people will sometimes (always?) chase after the flavor of the month? Seems to me that the same kind of pattern happened with the Parke-Offenloch m.p. (please forgive me, as I'm too lazy to go look up the spelling). Is there such a thing as a truly superior m.p. design? Does the wheel ever get reinvented for real?

I realize that this posting will invite a lot of flaming, but so be it. I'd like to read some serious input as to whether there really is such a thing as progress in m.p. designs or not. When I was young, many people were shaving metal off of m.p.'s - making them lighter rather than heavier.
