You don't want to waste their time? So, should English teachers not teach their students how to write because most of them wont become writers? Should math teachers not go over imaginary numbers because they don't apply to what most of those students will be doing in the future? Should PE and health teachers not teach of how to remain active and fit because most of their students will grow up and become stressed, lazy, and fat?
By teaching the basics of music, like scales, you would only be wasting the time of those students who are in band for an easy A, and their wasting your time by being there so what does it matter? You should be trying to make a difference and help out that one student that will go on and become a professional musician or just a serious hobbyist.
