One thing that works quite well is to go to the local Walmart and pick up a roll of grip lining ( used for drawers or cabinets--the brand name escapes me). You can cut this into whatever size you need and it not only will give you a bit of grip on the tuba (without any marks I may add) but it also grips the clothing you wear quite well. There are many colors, and if you can get black, then you are all set. This will eventually wear out, but it is not expensive and is easier to carry than a stand. Go to the kitchen supply area and just ask for this stuff, its cheap and quite effective.
