That's true about Revelli, he really loved the mixed sound. I've always tried to get the band sections I've played with to use a good mixture. It really bridges the sound between the tuba and the euphs. I once did a performance of the Holst First Suite with Revelli conducting and we used a mixed section. It worked wonderfully.
Along this same topic line, what are people's opinions about using an F tuba in this role? I'm not saying it can't be done but every time I've played in a section where F tubas were used as the top voice, it didn't sound as good to me as when Eb was used. The only exception I can remember was a single performance I heard of the President's Own back in 1978 when they had a matched set of Rudy Meinl horns. What a section! The only times other than that where I've heard a mixed section work well were when the upper horns were Eb tubas. Any ideas on this?
My opinion for what it's worth...
