Currently the Marine Band is using all CC tubas 99.5% of the time. For small wind ensemble tunes or brass ensemble stuff we may throw an Eb or F in there. In '78 they were all using BBb's. The contrabass tubas are necessary to keep the volume up to the level of the rest of the band. We generally use only 3 per concert so we can't afford the luxury of a bass tuba in the mix. The low woodwinds are there to provide blend(hmm...). Anyway that's how we've been doing it for quite some time, besides that, the lit. we play is not only marches and warhorses, much of the new stuff just doesn't lend itself to bass tuba.
