1. As my old teacher said, it's a great life but a lousy living. I would add that money matters more than you ever think it will and there's never enough (particularly in this world of expensive instruments).

2. Bear in mind, however, that few college degrees of any kind are an entry ticket into a job or profession (exceptions are accounting or possibly engineering). If majoring in music leaves you behind the same 8-ball as majoring in history or English, why not major in music if you love it? You still have the same options as with any liberal arts degree (e.g. law or MBA school).

3. Even successful performers supplement their income by non-performing means.

4. Consider double-majoring. A common one is performance and music ed. Some schools also offer interesting double majors which are music-friendly but involve technology (not all - some physics departments are sympatico to music and some are not).

5. Just because you major in something else doesn't mean you have to banish it from your life. And there are also nontraditional ways of succeeding as a performer.
