I'm not quibbling with anything you've said. But--

This sounds like one of those "a computer can't play chess because chess is a game of strategy and human creativity" arguments, which, although true, hasn't kept computers from getting to the grandmaster level of play. You've tried to codify what is done by way "artistic expression", which is not all that complex by computational standards--and it sounds simpler than devising a winning chess endgame strategy.

I submit that it's entirely feasible to devise a "modern" piano that adjusts intonation in accordance with artistic desires. Computational power is cheap nowadays.
