I have played professionally in some great orchestras and have played many different tubas. My own observations about tuning agree with equations solved by acoustical experts who are internationally known. I haven't said that noncompensating tubas aren't sometimes played very well. They are in spite of not having tubing that adds up to the correct lengths. My arguments are not tired but are old and true. Besson patented the compensating instrument more than 120 years ago!

Perhaps you should wonder why Steve Mead doesn't play a 5 or 6 valve noncompensating euphonium. Why doesn't Phil Meyers of the NY Phil play a simple 4 valve French horn? American orchestral players think Arnold Jacobs was great because of the tuba he played. Not so, I have played his tuba and he was great in spite of it. Lets get rid of the antiques and move into the 21 century.
