Well, those are string players we're talking about here! Yeah, I did notice that a while ago as well with cellists. But string players have such a dry sound if it doesn't "sing". That's why they always have to move around a vibrato everything :.)
On a more serious note, yes, vibrato is an interesting subject, cuz there are tastes. For example, I would use different vibrato when playing solo baroque and solo romantic. But when playing the foundation where people will listen for tuning, it would be easier and much stable when not using vibrato so musicians won't have to tune to a wobbling pitch.
